How to Renew Your Texas Real Estate License
Let’s take a look at the details of how to renew your real estate license in Texas—whether it’s your first or a subsequent renewal.
First Sales Agent Renewal
If you’re renewing your license for the first time, you’ll need to complete 98 hours of Sales Agent Apprentice Education (SAE). In total, you must complete 278 hours of education, including your 180-hour prelicensing course, before you renew.
Your SAE courses must include Legal Update I and II plus 90 hours of additional elective courses. SAE elective courses are usually grouped into 30-hour courses, so you’ll need to take three of them. All the schools on our list offer SAE courses.
Second or Subsequent Sales Agent Renewal
You are required to complete 18 hours of continuing education within two years of your last renewal date. Your CE credits in Texas must include Legal Updates I and II as well as a contract course and seven hours of approved electives.

How do I renew my real estate license in Texas?
As a sales agent or a broker, you can renew your real estate license online through the Texas Real Estate Commission website.
How much does it cost to renew my real estate license in Texas?
Aside from what you’ll pay for the required classes, the state charges a $110 fee for sales agents to renew their licenses ($217 for brokers). If you haven’t gone through a fingerprint background check yet, you’ll also need to complete that and pay an additional $38.25 fee.
You’ll be able to pay these fees online on the TREC website. You also have the option to renew by mail by filling out this renewal application and submitting it along with a check or money order to cover your fees.
What is the deadline for renewing my Texas real estate license?
As a Texas real estate sales agent, you have a renewal cycle of two years. Your license will expire two years from the date of your licensure or last renewal. Make sure to submit your renewal materials to TREC more than 10 days before your license expires to allow for processing time.
How do I renew my Texas real estate license if it has expired?
You can still complete your CE requirements and renew your license after your sales agent license has expired. You’ll need to pay a $250 CE deferral fee to the Texas Real Estate Commission, which will allow you 60 more days from the date of your license expiration to complete your CE hours and renew your license. If it takes you longer than 60 days to complete your CE requirements, you’ll need to pay an additional $250 late reporting fee.
